Austrian National Node (EPTRI-AT)

The Austrian National Node, represented by the Medical University of Graz (MUG), provides specialised expertise in paediatric orthopaedic medical devices, biomaterials research, and translational musculoskeletal medicine, supporting the development, evaluation, and clinical translation of innovative paediatric technologies through an integrated platform combining biomaterials research, preclinical modelling, clinical expertise, and regulatory support to accelerate the development of safe and effective solutions for children. 

The core activities span the entire translational pathway from preclinical assessment to clinical evaluation of paediatric orthopaedic devices. MUG offers advanced in vitro testing of implant materials and medical devices, including cytotoxicity and cytocompatibility studies, together with expertise in study design and clinical research support for paediatric orthopaedic investigations. These activities are complemented by extensive preclinical capabilities, including juvenile small- and large-animal models for the evaluation of implant materials, growth plate interactions, bone regeneration, and biomechanical performance of orthopaedic devices. MUG provides access to advanced imaging and analytical infrastructures, including in vivo micro-computed tomography, clinical CT imaging, hard-tissue histology, and digital image-based quantitative assessment of implant integration and bone growth. These capabilities are supported by dedicated animal research facilities, surgical infrastructures, and fully equipped laboratories for molecular and biochemical analyses. Strong expertise is available in the design and execution of non-pharmacological preclinical studies for medical devices, with particular emphasis on paediatric orthopaedic applications. In addition to experimental and clinical research services, MUG contributes expertise in regulatory and ethical aspects of paediatric medical device development, facilitates access to paediatric samples and associated data where appropriate, and supports the preparation of collaborative research and funding initiatives.
