EPTRI, through its coordinator and other relevant partners, is involved in several projects and has an active role in different partnerships related to the healthcare sector, with a particular focus on paediatric and rare diseases.

Projects

ID-EPTRI coordinated by Consorzio per Valutazioni Biologiche e Farmacologiche (CVBF) and funded within the H2020-INFRADEV-01-2017 programme, aimed to design the framework for the European Paediatric Translational Research Infrastructure (EPTRI), the new research infrastructure (RI) providing a conceptual design report (CDR) of EPTRI describing the scientific and technical requirements as well as the key components of the new RI. EPTRI arises from the need to find answers to the serious lack of medicines for children in EU and worldwide.

OrphaDev4Kids is a 3 year Project aiming to address the issue of Orphan medical devices (MDs) for the paediatric population. OrphaDev4Kids will grant access to a complex ecosystem including tools, facilities, and supportive services (e.g. regulatory advice, assistance for prototype development, certification and marketing authorization, etc.) aimed to maximise the value-for-patients of the research and development of paediatric MDs projects.

Memberships

European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)
EOSC is a is a European Commission initiative aimed at creating a virtual environment for researchers to store, share, and reuse research data.

EOSC goal is to provide European researchers and innovators with an open and trusted multi-disciplinary environment where they can publish, find and reuse data, tools and services for research and innovation.

EPTRI, as a research infrastructure focused on advancing knowledge on children’s growth and ontogeny to foster new paediatric research and providing access to expertise, key technologies, and translational research tools for paediatric innovation, will contribute to shape strategic priorities and influence the EOSC Partnership’s Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) by incorporating paediatric themes. EPTRI will also advocate for the need of improving the generation and transmission of paediatric health data, decreasing its fragmentation by promoting its organization and integration maintaining high ethical standards.

By joining EOSC, EPTRI will become part of a collaborative network of experts shaping the future of open science in Europe, namely by enhancing the accessibility and visibility of studies on paediatrics and rare diseases, and by driving innovation in paediatric data.

European Alliance for Transformative Therapies (TRANSFORM)
TRANSFORM is a multi-stakeholder Alliance that connects Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and policy-makers with patient groups, medical experts and associations, scientists, researchers, industry actors, networks and other relevant stakeholders. TRANSFORM aims to foster effective dialogue and provide evidence-based policy recommendations to enable safe and timely patient access to cell and gene therapies, whilst ensuring the sustainability of healthcare systems.

EPTRI is part of the TRANSFORM Steering Group, in the person of Dr. Giovanni Migliaccio. EPTRI supports the project in its dissemination actions and, at the same time, in promoting its goals within the European and international health ecosystem to improve equitable access to the most innovative medicines, such as Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs).

Building up on TRANSFORM’s work, EPTRI is developing a Thematic Research Platform (TRP) dedicated to Advanced Therapies, to advance the development and accessibility of innovative therapies across Europe.

EU Health Coalition
The EU Health Coalition is a multi-stakeholder initiative dedicated to driving change for a healthier Europe.

The Coalition promotes a shared vision of health in Europe, based on jointly developed recommendations. The purpose is to ensure that health remains high on the political agenda amid the geopolitical, economic and energy crises unfolding in Europe and to champion the changes required to address the unprecedented challenges that an ageing population and an increasing prevalence of chronic diseases pose to healthcare systems and citizens. The EU Health Coalition is composed of 46 patient organisations, EU research-oriented medical societies, industry organisations, healthcare providers, regional and local health authorities and other relevant stakeholders, who all share a common vision.

By joining the EU Health Coalition, EPTRI will push for better medicines for the paediatric population, ensuring that children and young adults receive the best therapeutic options and that children’s health is a priority

European Network of Paediatric Research at the European Medicines Agency (Enpr-EMA)

The European Network of Paediatric Research at the European Medicines Agency (Enpr-EMA) is a network of research networks, investigators and centres with recognised expertise in performing clinical studies in children, aiming to to facilitate studies in order to increase the availability of authorised medicines for children.

As a member of Enpr-EMA, EPTRI will help advance paediatric clinical research by promoting preclinical research in the paediatric field and its translation to clinical applications, while ensuring that the needs of paediatric paediatric patients are meet.

EPTRI is represented by Dr. Donato Bonifazi, our Board Member. Dr Bonifazi is part of the Enpr-EMA Coordinating Group (CG) for the 2025–2027 term.
