The 7th webinar on Neonatal Technologies organized by the EPTRI Medical Devices Platform was held online on 17th September of 2024.
In this webinar, which was a satellite event of the European Biotech Week, participants had the chance to learn more about the challenges and opportunities for the development and application of different technologies and medical devices to the neonatal population.
Our first speaker was Don Sharkey. Don is an academic neonatologist with a broad research portfolio keen on cross-discipline collaboration. His research focuses on the development and integration of healthcare technologies for neonatal care, particularly medical device development in the fields of neonatal resuscitation, neonatal transport, neonatal monitoring and diagnostics, and artificial intelligence (AI). Don focused on the challenges for the development of medical devices for newborns, but also on the opportunities and new devices being developed for use, particularly in the delivery room.
Our second speaker was Kathryn Beardsall. Kathryn an Associate Professor in the Academic Department of Paediatrics University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Neonatologist at University of Cambridge Addenbrookes Hospital. Her research focusses in the areas of: i. glucose monitoring and management, ii. innovative methods of vital sign monitoring. Both aiming for a better understand of neonatal physiology as well as designing medtech that address the specific clinical needs of the newborn. Kathryn presented her experience with glucose monitoring and management in the newborn population.
Our final speaker was Giuseppe Andreoni. Giuseppe is a Full Professor at the Department of Design of the Politecnico di Milano where he is the Director of the Laboratory “Technology and Design for Healthcare (TeDH)”, and professor at the School of Design. The research activity conducted at the Politecnico di Milano mainly consists of the design of products, systems, environments and services for the health and well-being of people using Co-Design and User-Centred Design methods combined with Ergonomics. He described the main typologies of wearables, the available solutions, and his experience with smart garments in monitoring newborns.
